Gesso
Gesso is a material commonly used by artists as a primer for painting surfaces. It is a mixture of a binder, such as rabbit skin glue or acrylic polymer, and a white powder, usually gypsum or calcium carbonate. The binder helps the powder adhere to the surface and creates a porous layer that improves the adhesion of subsequent layers of paint.
Gesso is applied to a variety of surfaces, including canvas, wood, paper, and masonite, and can be sanded smooth or left with a textured surface, depending on the desired effect. It also helps to seal the surface and prevent absorption of the paint, making colors appear more vibrant and enhancing the durability of the artwork.
In addition to its use in fine art, gesso is also used in decorative painting, furniture restoration, and other crafts. It is available in different forms, such as pre-made gesso in jars or tubes, or as a dry powder that can be mixed with water or other mediums to create a custom formula.
